Buying a Used Motorhome in NZ? Your Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist

19 June 2026

A used motorhome or caravan can be a brilliant buy — or an expensive mistake hiding behind a fresh wax. Before you commit, work through this checklist. Better still, get an independent inspection so you're not relying on the seller's word.

Mechanical

  • Engine condition, service history, and any oil or coolant leaks
  • Tyres — including age (check the date code), not just tread
  • Brakes, suspension and underbody for rust or damage
  • Current WoF/CoF and registration status

Habitation (the living space)

  • Water damage — soft spots in walls, floor or around windows; musty smells. This is the big one.
  • Roof, seams and seals for cracking or past leaks
  • Windows, vents and doors seal properly
  • Fridge, stove, heater and hot water all working

Gas, electrical & compliance

  • Is there a current gas certificate? Is the LPG system safe and tidy?
  • Does any 240V mains wiring have a current Electrical WOF (EWOF)?
  • Self-containment — does it hold a current Green Warrant? (Blue Warrants no longer count.)

Paperwork

  • Ownership matches the seller; no money owing (check on the Personal Property Securities Register)
  • Service records, manuals and warranty info

Why get an independent inspection

Sellers present well; problems hide. An independent pre-purchase inspection gives you a written report on mechanical condition, habitation, gas, electrical and compliance — so you can buy with confidence or negotiate with facts. It's a small cost against a five- or six-figure purchase.

RV Masters carries out pre-purchase inspections across the Waikato. Book a pre-purchase inspection or call 07 843 0070 before you buy.
