Self-containment certification is essential for any campervan, motorhome, or RV in New Zealand to enjoy the freedom of camping in designated areas.
Recent Changes to Self-Containment Regulations
New Zealand's self-containment regulations have changed to promote environmentally friendly camping and reduce the impact on public spaces. From 7 June 2025, all vehicles will need to be certified with a green warrant to be certified self-contained under the new requirements. These changes include stricter requirements for:
Fixed toilets: Only vehicles with a permanently fixed toilet can be certified as self-contained. Portable toilets are no longer acceptable.
Blue and green warrants: Vehicles with an existing blue warrant can continue to be used for freedom camping until June 7, 2025, or until the warrant expires, whichever comes first. From June 7, 2024, new warrants will be issued under the green warrant system.
Waste management: The new rules aim to improve waste management and reduce the environmental impact of freedom camping.
